Early Childhood Assistant Manager
TYPE OF POSITION
$17.25 / hour
BA or BS in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Child Development or related field. Preferred: Current license from the Minnesota Department of Education for Pre-Kindergarten/Nursery or Infant/Toddler Teacher Certificate or Child Care Specialist Certificate or Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate.
The Lead Preschool runs the preschool classroom based on a philosophy of trauma informed principles and goals. The Lead Preschool Teacher works with the Preschool Teacher, Assistant Teacher, interns, and volunteers to provide a warm, loving, atmosphere, and support the development of children ages 3 and 5 years and their parents at People Serving People. Must be able to work and plan in a team setting, with patience, enthusiasm and respect for children, as well as parents and fellow staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Works closely with the Preschool Teacher to meet the children’s needs.
- Understands the social-emotional needs of children in a shelter setting.
- Understands the impact of toxic stress and trauma on children in a shelter setting.
- Understands and can implement and build on the trauma-informed framework of our classrooms.
- Plans and facilitates curriculum for young children in a developmentally appropriate setting based heavily in social-emotional development.
- Encourages and teaches pre-literacy skills such as letter sounds and letter recognition.
- Encourages oral communication with other children and adults.
- Encourages social skills, such as sharing with and helping others.
- Encourages developmental skills such as color recognition, shapes, counting, reading, writing and improvement of gross motor skills.
- Works closely with Minneapolis Public Schools to refer children who might have special needs.
- Administers basic first aid and cares for sick children.
- Welcomes, talks with and meets with parents.
- Observes, evaluates, and assess children’s progress.
- Observes and reports on physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of children.
- Maintains clean classroom appearance by organizing, cleaning, and sanitizing daily.
- Keeps track and reports to the Early Childhood Assistant Manager any supply needs.
- Performs related administrative duties such as handing out and collecting all required paperwork from parents and keeping student files up to date.
- Creates monthly and daily communications for parents such as daily reports and monthly newsletters.
- Continually updates curriculum to meet the needs of students.
- Attends meetings and workshops as needed.
- Maintains appropriate program records.
- Completes first aid and Red Cross certified CPR training every 2 years.
- Completes 24 hours of in-service training per year
- Completes required trainings and documentation for Parent Aware rating.
- Collaborates with People Serving People’s Center of Excellence teaching staff as needed.
- Performs other duties assigned by the Early Childhood Assistant Manager.
The Lead Preschool Teacher supervises the Preschool Teacher, Assistant Teacher, volunteers, interns and practicum students.
- Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care principles and models.
- Knowledge of the developmental and emotional needs of young children.
- Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in a child development center.
- Knowledge of basic health and first aid techniques.

- Ability to articulate program goals and philosophy and apply it to working in the Early Childhood Development Program.

- Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft applications.
- Three or more years of experience working as a lead or assistant teacher in a Child Care Setting.
- Two or more years of experience serving multi-cultural, socially diverse population desired.
- First Aid and CPR certified or willing to be certified within 90 days of employment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must lift and/or move 70 lbs.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be loud at times.
