Resident Resources Assistant

Make an immediate impact on the lives of families in crisis, acquire firsthand experience supporting those experiencing homelessness, and gain insight into working in a 24/7 human services operation. The Front Desk stands at the very heart of People Serving People, welcoming families into shelter and distributing vital information and basic supplies to guests, staff, other volunteers, and the broader community.

Every day: 9:00 am–10:00 pm (3 hour shifts: 9:00 am–noon, 2:00–5:00 pm, 5:00–8:00 pm, 7:00-10:00 pm)
Requirements: Must be able to work in a diverse and fast-paced setting, complete our online application, pass a background check, and commit to a regular schedule for 3 months. Must be at least 16.

Daytime Early Childhood Development Program Assistant

Assist our Educational Services staff in either our Infant and Toddler room (6 weeks–2.5 years)
or our Preschool room (2.5 years–Kindergarten).

Monday–Friday: 9:00 am–4:30 pm (2-4 hour shift minimum)
Requirements: Complete our online application, pass a background check and commit to a regular schedule for three months. Must be at least 16.

K-5 Educational Support, Tutoring, and Enrichment

Read one-on-one with a child, support children in doing their homework, and help facilitate a small group of children in grade appropriate lessons, games, and crafts.

Monday–Thursday: 5:30–8:00 pm (Educational Support and Enrichment)
Fridays: 5:30-7:30 pm (Family Fun Night)
Saturdays: 1:00–3:00 pm (Enrichment Activities)
Requirements: Complete our online application, pass a background check and commit to a consistent schedule of one night per week for three to six months. Must be at least 18.

Games and Gifts

Assist our staff in packaging Family Game Packs for new families and wrapping birthday gifts for children celebrating birthdays.

Monday–Thursday: 11:00 am-7:00 pm (2 hour shift)
Requirements: Complete our online application, pass a background check and commit to a regular schedule for three to six months. Must be at least 18 or 12-17 with a parent.

Play and Learn

Join us for parent and child music play time and exploration led by an instructor from MacPhail. Then assist staff in providing fun, interactive and energetic play time for children ages 6 months to Pre-K, while parents attend a class led by Minneapolis Crisis Nursery.

Wednesdays: 5:45-7:30 pm
Requirements: Complete our online application, pass a background check and commit to a regular schedule for three months. Must be at least 16.

Reading Partner

Read with children in the front lobby and maintain books spaces throughout the building.

Every day: 8:00 am–8:00 pm, (2 hour shift minimum)

Meal Server

Serve breakfast, lunch or dinner to families and assist with clean-up as necessary.

Requirements: Must be at least 12; children 12–15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Building Beautification

Assist our housekeeping department with general cleaning duties, including sweeping and mopping floors, washing windows, vacuuming, folding laundry, and cleaning vacant guest rooms.

Monday-Friday: 9:00 am–10:00 pm (2–4 hour shift)
Saturday: noon–10:00 pm (2-4 hour shifts)
Sundays: noon–3:00 pm and 6:00-10:00 pm (2-4 hour shift)
Requirements: Must be at least 12 years old (children 12–15 must be accompanied by an adult).

Donation Assistant

Assist our donation team with sorting donations so that the donated items get to the department that need the items faster.

Monday-Friday: 8:00 am–3:00 pm (2 hour shift minimum)
Requirements: Complete our online application, pass a background check and commit to a regular schedule for three months. Must be at least 18.

Development Assistant

Help with donor relations and fundraising. Write thank you cards, address envelopes, do event preparation, and more. Good handwriting is a must!

Monday-Friday: 8:00 am–4:00 pm (2 hour shift minimum)
Requirements: Complete our online application, pass a background check and commit to a regular schedule for three months. Must be at least 18.

Teen Program

Programming challenges teens to be problem solvers, innovators, risk-takers and creators as they develop projects that are meaningful to them.

Monday-Thursday: 6:00- 8:30 pm
