Group Volunteer Opportunities

Sign up your group to volunteer

There are many ways for groups to support the mission of People Serving People. You can serve our families by volunteering in our shelter, make an impact by gathering a group at your location to assemble donation kits, or work with us on a special project specifically designed for your group.

On-site Volunteering

We welcome volunteer groups of 4-5 at a time to participate in projects that support our basic shelter operations, such as assisting our Culinary Services team with daily meal preparation or contributing to building beautification projects. There may also be special opportunities throughout the year that require assistance from large groups, such as our cultural celebrations.

    • Due to staffing and spatial constraints, we rarely accept groups of more than 10 people.
    • Volunteers must be over the age of 13.

Have a larger group?
Assembling and donating kits off-site or coordinating a donation drive is an excellent way for larger groups to help the families at our shelter. See our list of Donation Kits below.

Please contact Nolan Isaacson, Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator, at nisaacson@peopleservingpeople.org or 612-277-0246 to discuss opportunities for your group.

Off-site volunteering

Off-site volunteering is an excellent way for large corporate groups, civic groups, or families with children to support People Serving People’s mission. Whether at your office or in the comfort of your home, your group can volunteer by purchasing items needed to assemble special kits containing highly requested items for our families. Explore our kit assembly projects below, and contact us for a wide range of other kits and guides, including:

  • Cleaning packs
  • Shower kits
  • Family-sized hygiene kits (BIPOC products preferred)

Assemble linen packs

Linens packs with optional teddy bear towel

Your linen packs will be given to families that enroll in our shelter services and are assigned a room. Between our two locations, more than 100 rooms are stocked with clean linens, while our staff does laundry for over 300 people, which is no small feat. Linens are hugely appreciated and will consistently be used at our shelter. Volunteers will pack the following items into one laundry basket for a family being served in our shelter. For the sit-down component, volunteers can also create a “teddy bear towel” out of a washcloth as a sentimental addition.

Assemble move-out baskets

Your generous “move out baskets” will be given to families who are transitioning out of our shelter and into stable housing. These items will help alleviate costs as they settle into their new home and serve as a send-off gift on behalf of People Serving People and your team! Volunteers can begin this activity by pairing up to make a no-sew fleece tied blanket for each kit. Volunteers will then take their completed blanket to an assembly line to fill a basket with additional supplies.

Potty Training Kits

Potty training can be stressful for both parents and the child. With these potty training kits, we can equip families with the right tools to help make their child’s transition go as smoothly as possible. These kits also ensure that children can utilize the toilets within their unit’s bathroom.

Outfit Bundles

When families first move into our shelter, our team grants them access to our Clothing Closet and lets each family member pick one brand-new outfit. Your generous donation will help us stock our Clothing Closet with a variety of outfits for our families to choose from.

Family Game Packs

Families commonly request games and activities from our staff while residing at our shelters. Your family game packs will provide families with more recreational activities during their stay with us.
