Why the new name?
This September, People Serving People underwent a historic expansion, adding a new shelter, Belonging Place, and a new building, Covenant Commons, to meet the community’s growing needs. As a result, we could no longer refer to our first shelter—now one of two in downtown Minneapolis—simply as our “Downtown Shelter.”
About our expansion
People Serving People got its start in 1982 by providing shelter for men with substance use disorders. In the late 1980s/early 1990s, we shifted our mission to meet a new community need—families needing emergency shelter. Since 2002, our first shelter for families experiencing homelessness has been located at 614 South 3rd Street, Minneapolis. In 2004, we added St. Anne’s Place shelter. In early September, we opened our third shelter, Belonging Place, also located in downtown Minneapolis. So it was time to rename our largest and tallest shelter—serving 109 families.
We’ve also expanded to add a fourth location, Covenant Commons, which houses our Early Learning Center and will allow us to grow to meet the community’s increasing needs.
A new name, the same unwavering commitment to families
We reintroduce Possibility Place! Named after one of our core values, Possibility Place continues its long history as a comprehensive building and community that provides and houses:
- Emergency shelter
- Permanent Supportive Housing
- Our K-6 after-school program and youth engagement programming
- On-site early learning program and classrooms
- Family support programs and services
- Hennepin County’s Healthcare for the Homeless Clinic
- Minneapolis Public Schools Office coordinating transportation for our K-12 guests
- A walk-in Mental Health Clinic once per week
- A full kitchen and dining room serving three hot meals each day
- Our administrative offices
