On April 21, 2026, our CEO, Hoang Murphy, testified before the Minneapolis City Council in support of a temporary change to the pre-eviction filing notice (from 30 to 45 days) to give renters more time to pay their rent.

The Council ultimately voted 8 to 5 to pass the eviction filing extension. This action—coupled with the City’s actions to expand emergency rental assistance funding to $3.8 million (with the Wilson Family Foundation to match every dollar for a total of $7.6 million) — is exactly what families need. Right now, families need time (eviction extension) and money (rental assistance).
Hoang Murphy first thanked the city for funding emergency rental assistance in the amount of $3.8 million and the Wilson Foundation for matching
that amount, for a total of $6.2 million in rental assistance for people and families harmed by Operation Metro Surge. Murphy shared People Serving People’s position with the council, sharing how rental assistance paired for more time helps families and landlords:
The brutal reality is that we are at capacity. We are the last stop for families from being on the street and the reality is that there aren’t homeless families on the street because they don’t get to stay families if they are. And that is the burden that I’m asking you to hold today. Now that there is more money, there must be additional time to make sure that landlords . . . get paid and so that families can get those dollars to them.
– Hoang Murphy, CEO
Thank you to the Council Members who co-authored the ordinance amendment: Aurin Chowdhury, Aisha Chughtai, Jamal Osman, Jason Chavez, and Soren Stevenson, and Council Members Robin Wonsley, Elliott Payne, and Jamison Whiting for voting in support of this important measure to protect our most vulnerable neighbors.
