The event will start with a Pre-Game Barbecue at the Metrodome Picnic Pavilion and will include a gourmet barbeque sponsored by the American Culinary Federation, live musical performance by Tim Mahoney, Twins-themed silent auction, children's carnival and visit from a current or former Minnesota Twins player. "People Serving People does a great job of helping people in our community who need it the most," says Twins manager and PSP spokesperson Ron Gardenhire. "I am proud to assist them and their good work." All proceeds from this event, as well as the game tickets, will benefit homeless children and families. Two-thirds of the residents receiving services are children, with an average age of seven years old. Last year, the Home Game to End Homelessness raised $20,000. The money raised from the event will help PSP with child care, health care, job training and counseling needs. "Educating the community on the face of homelessness is our goal," says Jim Minor, president of PSP. "These people are your neighbors, your friends and people you pass by every day. It's important to recognize that being homeless not only affects the parent - it affects the child. We hope this event will raise awareness and assist our organization to help families become self-sufficient." The mission of PSP is to provide a safe, sober and secure environment for homeless families while promoting self-sufficiency. This mission is achieved through community monetary donations, volunteer hours and fundraisers. She knew this was something she ultimately wanted to achieve. When she decided it was food she wanted to work with she turned to a friend for help. Faduma did not have the funding to afford any of the cooking classes she had heard of so her friend directed her to the Kitchen Training Program at People Serving People. When Faduma was accepted into the program she knew she was on her way. Shortly after graduating from the program Faduma went on to own her very own cafe. Even after achieving such great success she has not forgotten the people that got her there. "I loved the kitchen crew and PSP managers. They are the kindest people on earth. They were always ready to go the extra mile. Even the Executive Director and her husband came down to my cafe. I was so glad," says Faduma of the kitchen staff. If you are interested in tasting some of Faduma's treats you can visit her at the Starlight Cafe located in the Midtown Global Market, downtown Minneapolis. The ACF members will come together to prepare, cook and serve the meals to more than 300 residents staying at the facility, approximately 1,000 meals total. PSP is one of the largest emergency housing facilities located in Minnesota. "The American Culinary Federation prides itself on reaching out to the community. Most of us have family and most of us have kids. Helping an organization like People Serving People that has a mission of serving children, is something very special to us," said Venne. Residents staying at the 10-story shelter will have a full breakfast including made-to-order omelets and pancakes, a first class lunch and two options for dinner: Carnival Fun, for the kids; or Sunset Soiree, for adults. "The shelter is for kids, so it was important we catered to them," said Chris Dwyer, former president of the ACF - Minneapolis and active member. "We will have a special dinner just for the kids with them just in mind." After the Carnival Fun dinner, that includes fun-shaped chicken nuggets, min-corndogs and popcorn, the children will go with dozens of staff and volunteers to play games. There, they can kick-back and be kids, while the parents will be surprised by the transformation of the basement cafeteria into the Sunset Soiree. "Some of these parents have gone weeks, even months without a break," said Wendy Darst, volunteer coordinator for People Serving People. "By giving our adults a wonderful sit-down meal where they can relax and not have to worry about their children; that will be a break much needed." During the Sunset Soiree, the adults will feast on a large salad bar, meat-carving station, fresh fish and dessert delicacies. Area businesses and individuals donated nearly all of the food prepared for this event. Last year residents staying at PSP were overwhelmed with the over-the-top spreads of food presented to them during each meal. "Tonight's atmosphere was like a wonderful escape from the world out there," said Annette Rutes at the 2006 Cooks Who Care Day, "It's been a long time since I felt like I was getting any 'special treatment' and it will be something I will always remember. Thank you." The American Culinary Federation of Minneapolis will also cater the Fourth Annual Home Game to End Homelessness with the Minnesota Twins. All proceeds from that event will benefit People Serving People.
